This fantasy role-playing strategy game continues the story of Blue Dragon one year after the original, as Shu and his companions use powerful phantom shadows to face enemies born from the devastation of earlier events. Battles unfold in real time on isometric maps, requiring the player to adjust tactics quickly and issue simple commands through touch controls.
Units can be sent across the battlefield, assigned targets, told to heal, or directed to special areas. Up to sixteen humans and Mecha Robos can take part in real-time battles and shadow fights, while story scenes occasionally interrupt progress through a map.
