Set 23 years before the events of Solomon's Keep, the game follows a battle mage sent by the wizard college to stop its graduate Solomon Dark before he grows powerful. In Solomon's Boneyard, the player chooses one of seven young wizards and fights waves of undead in a two-thumb survival shooter set in a graveyard.
Defeating enemies earns levels and unlocks skills and items to aid the fight. Each character is fixed with their starting primary skills, while additional options become available by unlocking bonus characters. Gold carries over between attempts and can be spent on permanent perks that let a wizard begin with chosen skills or other bonuses. Power-ups found during a run can increase damage or improve a skill.
