Hinterland is a fantasy role-playing strategy game that combines real-time combat with settlement building. The hero leads a party and helps its inhabitants establish a community in the wilderness. Each playthrough takes place in a randomly generated world with different resources, items and challenges.
Players recruit settlers and equip them for defense or assign them tools for production. Farmers can develop into warriors, while characters can be shaped through different specializations. Enemies include orc war camps, dark elf raiding parties, goblin-infested mines and ruins filled with undead. Gameplay settings let players adjust the type of challenge, including a world without raiders.
