Avernum: Escape from the Pit

This fantasy role-playing game is set in Avernum, an underground nation where the Empire sends its outcasts. Banished to the volcanic depths by the cruel Emperor Hawthorne, the protagonist must survive among monsters as the Avernites try to build a new country. The player can fight for safety and freedom, or seek revenge on those who condemned them to exile.

The vast underground world is explored through its wilderness, towns, and dungeons. Players take on main and side quests, search for magical artifacts, and fight using spells and battle disciplines. Character development includes a choice of beneficial traits, while the ability system offers more than 50 spells and battle disciplines. The game has three separate ways to complete its central quest: seek safety, escape, or take revenge; players can pursue one or all three.
