How to Install Mods for Stray
Most Stray modifications are installed manually through the Paks folder in the game's directory. Before installing, be sure to check the description of the specific mod: graphics presets, photo mode, trainers, and mods based on Unreal ModLoader may require additional steps.
- Download the archive with the modification and extract it.
- Open the Paks folder located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stray\Hk_project\Content\Paks.
- Copy the mod file into this directory.
- Launch the game.
To remove a modification, simply delete the corresponding file from the Paks folder. If a mod is installed differently, we will mention it in the description.
Graphics Mods for Stray: How to Improve Visuals, Lighting, and Atmosphere
This section includes modifications that make Stray look brighter, more contrast-rich, and more atmospheric. Mods like these improve the visual feel of the cyberpunk city, make the game more immersive, and help you see familiar locations in a new way.
Simple Realistic 3D for Stray: Photorealistic Visuals
This mod improves the game's graphics using ReShade filters. After installing it, the lighting becomes brighter, and the shadows look more realistic. The quality of post-processing effects is also noticeably improved.
Installation steps:
- Download and extract the archive.
- Place it in the folder with the Stray-Win64-Shipping.exe executable file. By default, it is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stray\Hk_project\Binaries\Win64.
- Launch the game.
If you previously installed another ReShade-based mod, be sure to remove the old preset first.
Real Depth 3D ReShade: Better Graphics and Image Depth
Real Depth 3D ReShade helps make the image richer and adds a sense of depth. After installation, some textures, such as green foliage, may display incorrectly. This is not a critical issue, but it is better to know about it in advance.
The installation method is the same as for the previous mod.
Gameplay Mods for Stray: Co-op, First-Person Mode, and New Features
These modifications are best suited for players who have already finished Stray and want a new experience. First-person mode changes how the city feels and makes the cat's journey more personal, while the co-op mod lets you play through the story campaign with a friend on the same screen. If you enjoy co-op playthroughs, check out our list of the best co-op games on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox.
Splitscreen: Local Co-op on a Split Screen
This section contains detailed instructions for installing the modification. Follow all the steps below to launch the co-op mode.
Follow this link to the Splitscreen modification on Nexus Mods. To download the improvement, you must log in or register on the site, otherwise access to the download will be blocked.
Click the Files tab and use the Manual Download buttons one by one in the corresponding windows for the files Splitscreen and Splitscreen required config.
On the opened pages, use the Slow Download button to install the files. You do not need to buy premium or use fast download. Both files are very small, around 13 KB, and will download quickly even at low speed.
After downloading, extract the archives and place the downloaded files in the game's root folder. Steam users can open the client and find Stray in the list of purchased apps. After that, right-click it, open Properties, and in the Local Files section, click Browse to open the correct folder.
In the Stray game files directory, first go to Stray / Hk_project / Content / Paks and place the SplitScreenRequiredConfig_P.pak file there.
In the same location, create a LogicMods folder and open it. Place the SplitScreenMod.pak file inside the LogicMods folder.
Follow this link to automatically download UnrealModLoader, then extract the files to any convenient location.
Open the UnrealModLoader folder and run the UnrealEngineModLauncher file. Launch Stray.
In the main menu, press F9 on the keyboard. The screen will split for two users: the main image will appear in the upper part, while the active main menu buttons will appear in the lower area on a completely black background.
Pressing F9 again allows the player to add more users, but there are some limitations and bugs. Detailed information about this is provided in the next section.
Limitations and Bugs: How to Avoid Problems When Launching the Mod
First of all, note that the mod developer has not completed the entire game in split-screen mode, so there is currently no confirmation that the improvement works without errors throughout the full playthrough. If you encounter bugs, restart the game and load the latest save without activating additional users.
Pay attention to the main details of how the Splitscreen modification works:
- Additional users are activated with the F9 key on the keyboard.
- In co-op mode, only the session host can see the HUD, so other joined users will have to explore the game world without it.
- In rare cases, problems can occur when moving to other levels: friends who joined the session may get stuck. Reload the save and reconnect the other users.
- Stray was not designed for split-screen use, so visual glitches may appear from time to time.
- Add more than one extra player at your own risk: the developer has not confirmed stable operation for three or more users.
- The camera may lose sight of the main player. In this case, try restarting the save. The mod developer is aware of this issue and will try to fix it soon.
- Using the F9 key outside the main menu can cause fatal errors that lead to a full game crash. Close Stray, run UnrealEngineModLauncher again, and reopen the game.
Stray: First Person Mod. First-Person View
This mod lets you see the world through the cat's eyes. Jumping and moving through locations in first person feels unusual, but it can offer a new gameplay experience.
PhotoMode mod. Photo Mode
Stray does not have a built-in photo mode. This issue can be fixed with a dedicated mod. In addition to taking screenshots, the mod also lets you adjust depth of field, change the camera angle, and apply various color filters.
Installation steps:
- Download and install UnrealModLoader.
- Download the mod.
- Open the Paks folder located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stray\Hk_project\Content\Paks.
- Create a LogicMods directory inside it.
- Move the PhotoMode.pak file into this folder.
- Launch UnrealModLoader.
- Launch Stray.
To launch photo mode, press F9.

If, for some reason, you like dogs more than cats, take a look at this add-on. It lets you play through the entire game as an adorable black-and-white puppy.

New Skins For B12. New Looks for the B-12 Robot
This modification lets you make the B-12 droid's appearance more detailed. In addition, you can choose alternative skins for the robot. They change the color of its body and add new accessories, such as extra antennas.

If you do not like the cat wearing a backpack, you can remove it with this modification. The B-12 robot can also be made invisible.

Unusual Stray Mods: Shrek, Sonic, and Other Weird Replacements
These modifications noticeably break the atmosphere of the original Stray, but they are great for repeat playthroughs, screenshots, and funny experiments. If you have already explored the game inside and out, unusual skins can refresh the experience.
Shrek Instead of the Cat
This modification replaces the fluffy protagonist with the green ogre from DreamWorks animated films. The changes are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay.
JOKE mod CJ. Play as CJ
A joke modification that replaces the cat model with CJ from GTA: San Andreas. A great way to surprise your friends.
Spyro the Dragon. Play as Spyro
This modification replaces the cat model with the dragon from the Spyro the Dragon series. Only the protagonist's appearance changes. He will not be able to breathe fire or fly.
Sonic Cat
A funny mod that turns your cat into blue Sonic from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He still moves on all fours, though.
Trainer for Stray: Cheats, Free Camera, and Invincibility
This modification is a trainer for Stray that unlocks additional commands. These include invincibility mode, free camera, camera angle switching, and the ability to move the cat to any point in the location.
Trainer hotkeys:

- Shift+F2: switch to free camera and teleport the cat to the place where you moved it.
- F3: show the health bar.
- F3+Shift: change the volume.
- F4: enable invincibility mode.
- F5: save.
- F6: load.
Installation steps:
- Download and install Unreal ModLoader.
- Download the mod.
- Open the Paks folder located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stray\Hk_project\Content\Paks.
- Create a LogicMods directory inside it.
- Move the StrayTrainer.pak file into this folder.
- Launch UnrealModLoader.
- Launch Stray.
